Happy New Year!!

Sunday morning I went for a paddle in the outrigger canoe and when we jumped in the water we could hear the whales singing. It really is one of the most amazing things ever.. I love it. After awhile, the whales got really close to us and we could hear them singing through the hull of the canoe. We just saw there, above water and listened to the symphony below. It was beautiful. The waves rolled through in the morning, the water was an amazing color blue, the whales kept on singing and the wind stayed mellow all day – it was the perfect start to 2012.

I got a package a few days ago from San Lorenzo Bikinis and it was full of the cutest shirts, hats, stickers and bikinis!! Ladies, if you haven’t heard of them already, make sure to check them out. I know I’m known for my 2XU compression tights and tops but underneath that is always a pair of my favorite San Lorenzo bikini. They are great for paddling, surfing or just hanging out at the beach. I wear them daily at work and have put them to the test in all sorts of conditions. They are super cute, comfortable and really flattering. Love that they are cheeky and super functional at the same time! The hipster bottoms are my favorite but I also really like the garter belt and booty short styles. It’s mellowing out at work which means it is back to training for me… it’s been a fun few weeks – great to see all my friends over the holidays but looking forward to getting back to my regular routine!

Woke up early Thursday morning for the 4th Annual (TRI)ptophan Turkey Day Triathlon! Started off with a 1/3 mile swim, followed by a 16-mile bike and finished with a 2-mile run. Lots of people showed up for this free event put on by Kym & Kris from Kiser Motorcycles. We had to deal with the traffic lights & stop signs which made for an interesting bike ride but I was fortunate to make it through most of the major intersections without having to stop!

All in all, it was the perfect way to start Thanksgiving day.. and a great excuse to indulge in Kristin’s delicious Chocolate Pot de Creme and Apple Crumble Pie!

Grateful for family, friends, health and the ability to do what I love every day.

Oh...where do I even begin?

Saw this bag at a grocery store recently and had to laugh (not a good laugh…more like a super annoyed ‘are you kidding me’ laugh).

First of all, did you notice that the bag says “degradable” and not “biodegradable”? I’m not sure why they think that being degradable is a good thing, but my guess is they don’t really know the difference or maybe they just hoped no one would notice. The difference is important, those 3 missing letters change everything…

Biodegradable Plastic is plastic which can decompose into carbon dioxide, methane, water, inorganic compounds, or biomass via microbial assimilation (the enzymatic action of microorganism). To be considered biodegradable, this decomposition has to be measured by standardized tests, and take place within a specified time period, which vary according to the “disposal” method chosen.

Degradable Plastic is manufactured by combining traditional plastics with additives which breaks down the plastic into small fragments. It degrades as a result of physical and chemical impact. They do not meet any standards in place for biodegradability and should not be considered biodegradable.

Basically, degradable plastic isn’t really something they should be so proud of. The fact that it breaks down into small pieces is bad enough but that they choose to highlight that as a selling point is beyond me. Why would it ever be a good thing for the bag to “fragment into really small pieces”?? Doesn’t that mean that it’s easier for marine animals to mistake for food?

Food for thought: The US goes through 100 billion plastic bags every year, and approximately only 3% gets recycled which means that the other 97% ends up in our landfills, waterways, coastlines and OCEANS. So stay away from plastic bags (even if they say degradable) and bring your own bag instead.
